A journey through the V&A’s archives
Using its ‘East meets West’ aesthetic, DENHAM has created a summer denim collection for both men and women. Researched in the V&A and designed with a modern workwear perspective, the range encompasses a vibrant mix of colourful patterns sourced from an album of Japanese textiles and a seascape by Gustave Le Gray, an early pioneer of photography as an art form.

What’s your favourite artwork in the museum, and why?
“A huge architectural cutaway drawing of St. Paul’s Cathedral. It measures 9 x 12 feet and took the draughtsman nearly 5 years to complete.”
What is the best thing about working at the V&A?
“My favourite part of working at the museum is being surrounded by best-in-class examples of human creativity.”

Tell me something fun I would never know about the museum
“The Great Bed of Ware’ was possibly made as a marketing play to attract visitors to an inn in Ware, Hertfordshire. It’s supposed to be haunted, and in 1736 is recorded to have slept 26 butchers and their wives.”
What is your favourite piece in the DENHAM explores the V&A collection, and why?
“The black t-shirt with kimono text. It goes well with my grey beard.”

“To be honest, I can’t wait to see Gabriella Chanel. Fashion Manifesto in September.”
Tell me something fun I would never know about the museum.
“There are beehives on the roof of the museum from which honey is harvested annually.”

What’s your favourite artwork in the museum, and why?
“A costume for Because We Must designed by artist, costume designer and club promotor Leigh Bowery. It’s punk, theatre, underground art, and fashion in one object.”
The V&A is famous for its well-curated exhibitions. What has been your favourite exhibition at the V&A?
“It’s hard to pick a favourite exhibition. A few of my recent favourites have been Fashioning Masculinities: The Art of Menswear, looking at male attire through the centuries to present day and Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up focused on the artist’s life through the lens of her belongings and clothing.”

What is the best thing about working at the V&A?
“The V&A is a diverse platform welcoming everyone. I’ve been building up confidence and learning skills from the lovely team.”

“My fav is the Winnie-the-Pooh exhibition in 2017. It’s a tale and an amazing world for both adults and children to enjoy and love to explore.”

Tell me something fun I would never know about the museum.
“In the Morris Room in the café, there are two sections where the original artwork has been preserved. If you look closely, you can see the colour difference on one of the walls and the ceiling.”
What is your favourite piece in the DENHAM explores the V&A collection, and why?
“The DXVA Tokyo Jacket – I love the archive pattern details on the collar and pockets.”
